All dentist professionals are required to undertake regular first aid training, this prepares them to potentially deal and respond to a medical emergency involving a patient who is visiting the surgery.
The General Dental Council (GDC) require dental professionals to keep their skills and knowledge up to date through continuing professional development (CPD). This contributes to improved patient care and ensures your practice meets and maintains a high professional standard.
The GDC recommend that 10 hours in every 5-year CPD cycle is dedicated to CPR/AED and medical emergencies which equates to 2 hours of CPD in this topic every year. The resuscitation council (UK) guidelines also recommend CPR training is updated annually.
Course content:
1. To perform Basic Life Support
2. To use an AED competently
3. To perform first aid for a choking casualty
4. To manage anaphylaxis and use of adrenalin autoinjector (AAI)
5. To be able to use emergency medical equipment (oxygen),
6. To be able to recognise and respond appropriately to asthma, fainting, epilepsy, and heart attacks.
After successful completion candidates are awarded with a tailored made CPD certificate which meets the GDC requirements and clearly states the aims of the course, learning content, objectives, and development outcomes.
